Introducción: La evaluación del crecimiento físico y la aptitud física es considerada una tarea beneficiosa para la salud y del rendimiento deportivo. Objetivo: Comparar el crecimiento físico y la aptitud física de jóvenes nadadores y no-nadadores de una región del Perú. Metodología: Se efectuó un estudio descriptivo (comparativo) en niños y adolescentes de 6 a 13 años. Se conformó dos grupos de estudio. Grupo 1: Practicantes de natación (nadadores) y Grupo 2: No-practicantes de natación (no-nadadores). Se evaluó las medidas antropométricas de peso, estatura, circunferencia de la cintura (CC) y las pruebas físicas de salto horizontal (SH) y agilidad. Se calculó el Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC) y el estado de madurez. Resultados: No hubo diferencias en el peso y estatura entre ambos grupos en todos los rangos de edad (p>0,05). En la CC, los nadadores de ambos sexos mostraron valores inferiores en relación a los no-nadadores al menos desde los 6-7 años, 8-9 años y 10-11 años (p<0,05). En las pruebas físicas, no hubo diferencias en la agilidad entre ambos grupos (p>0,05), sin embargo, en el SH, los nadadores mostraron mejor despeño que sus similares no-nadadores (P<0,05), en los hombres a los 10-11 años y 12-13 años (p<0,05) y en las mujeres en todos los rangos de edad (p<0,05). Conclusión: Los jóvenes nadadores y no-nadadores presentaron un similar patrón de crecimiento físico en peso y estatura, excepto en la CC, donde los no-nadadores mostraron valores superiores. En las pruebas físicas, ambos grupos evidenciaron similares valores de agilidad en todos los rangos de edad y los nadadores mostraron mejores resultados en el SH que sus similares no nadadores. Estos resultados sugieren la práctica de la natación de tres veces por semana, lo que podría ayudar a mantener un adecuado perfil antropométrico y mejorar la fuerza de los miembros inferiores.(AU)


Introduction: The evaluation of physical growth and fit-ness is considered a beneficial task for health and sports per-formance.Objective: To compare the physical growth and fitness ofyoung swimmers and non-swimmers in a region of Peru Methodology: A descriptive (comparative) study was car-ried out in children and adolescents aged 6 to 13 years. Twostudy groups were formed. Group 1: Swimming practitioners(swimmers) and Group 2: Non-swimming practitioners (non-swimmers). Anthropometric measurements of weight, height,sitting height, waist circumference (WC) and the physicaltests of horizontal jump (HH) and agility were evaluated.Body Mass Index (BMI) and maturity status were calculated.Significant differences were determined by means of the “t”test for independent samples.Results: There were no differences in weight, sittingheight and height between both groups in all age ranges(p>0.05). In CC, swimmers of both sexes showed lower val-ues in relation to non-swimmers at least from 6-7 years, 8-9years and 10-11 years (p<0.05). In the physical tests, therewere no differences in agility between both groups (p>0.05),however, in the SH, swimmers showed better performancethan their similar non-swimmers (P<0.05), in males at 10-11years and 12-13 years (p<0.05) and in females in all ageranges (p<0.05).Conclusion: Young swimmers and non-swimmers pre-sented a similar pattern of physical growth in weight andheight, except in CC, where non-swimmers showed highervalues. In the physical tests, both groups evidenced similaragility values in all age ranges and swimmers showed betterresults in SH than their similar non-swimmers. These resultssuggest that the practice of swimming three times a week hasa positive role on the anthropometric profile, adipose andlower limb strength performance.(AU)

Objetivo: Determinar la asociación entre talla baja y erro-res de refracción ocular en escolares de Muquiyauyo. Metodología: El tamaño de la población estuvo constituidapor 250 escolares y el tamaño muestral (n) para el nivel deconfianza 99.99% fue de 215 escolares, el estudio fue analí-tico observacional transversal, y la técnica utilizada para la re-colección de datos fue de observación y encuesta medianteuna ficha con datos de medición antropométrica y refracciónocular (medida de vista con autokeratorefractometro). Resultados: De los 215 niños evaluados 158 presentanerrores de refracción ocular, a quienes se les realizó la medidade vista con autokeratorefractometro; presentando 17 niñosmiopía, 9 hipermetropía, 21 astigmatismo, 32 miopía y astig-matismo y 79 hipermetropía y astigmatismo. Con respecto al análisis bivariado de talla baja y miopía, astigmatismo, hiperme tropía se encontraron que los niños que tienen tallabaja se asociaron significativamente con el astigmatismo p = <0.0000965, la razón de prevalencia =2.33 IC (1.44,3.78); es decir, que los que presentan talla baja tienen dosveces más el riesgo de presentar astigmatismo. Los niños que presentaron talla baja se asocian significati-vamente con refracción ocular P=<0.01 razón de prevalencia6.81 IC (2.57,18.1). Conclusión: Los escolares de Muquiyauyo con talla bajatienen 6 veces más riesgo de presentar alteraciones en la re-fracción ocular.(AU)


Objective: To determine the association between shortstature and ocular refractive errors in schoolchildren inMuquiyauyo. Methodology: The population size consisted of 250 scho-olchildren and the sample size(n) for the 99.99% confidencelevel was 215 schoolchildren. The study was a cross-sectionalobservational analytical study, and the technique used fordata collection was observation and survey using an anthro-pometric measurement and ocular refraction data sheet (eyemeasurement with autokeratorefractometer). Results: Of the 215 children evaluated, 158 had ocular re-fractive errors, and their eyesight was measured with an au-tokeratorefractometer; 17 children had myopia, 9 had hypero-pia, 21 had astigmatism, 32 had myopia and astigmatism and79 had hyperopia and astigmatism. With respect to the biva-riate analysis of short stature and myopia, astigmatism andhyperopia, it was found that children with short stature weresignificantly associated with astigmatism p = <0.0000965,prevalence ratio =2.33 CI (1.44, 3.78); that is, those withshort stature have twice the risk of presenting astigmatism. Children with short stature are significantly associated withocular refraction P=<0.01 prevalence ratio 6.81 CI (2.57,18.1). Conclusion: Muquiyauyo school children with short statureare 6 times more likely to have ocular refractive disorders.(AU)

The objective of this study was to investigate the protective effects and mechanisms of dietary administration of sodium humate (HNa) and its zinc and selenium chelate (Zn/Se-HNa) in mitigating Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhi) induced intestinal injury in broiler chickens. Following the gavage of 109 CFU S. Typhi to 240 broilers from 21-d to 23-d aged, various growth performance parameters such as body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and feed ratio (FCR) were measured before and after infection. Intestinal morphology was assessed to determine the villus height, crypt depth, and chorionic cryptologic ratio. To evaluate intestinal barrier integrity, levels of serum diamine oxidase (DAO), D-lactic acid, tight junction proteins, and the related genes were measured in each group of broilers. An analysis was conducted on inflammatory-related cytokines, oxidase activity, and Nuclear Factor Kappa B (NF-κB) and Nuclear factor erythroid2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway-related proteins and mRNA expression. The results revealed a significant decrease in BW, ADG, and FCR in S. typhi-infected broilers. HNa tended to increase FCR (P = 0.056) while the supplementation of Zn/Se-HNa significantly restored BW and ADG (P < 0.05). HNa and Zn/Se-HNa exhibit favorable and comparable effects in enhancing the levels of serum DAO, D-lactate, and mRNA and protein expression of jejunum and ileal tight junction. In comparison to HNa, Zn/Se-HNa demonstrates a greater reduction in S. Typhi shedding in feces, as well as superior efficacy in enhancing the intestinal morphology, increasing serum catalase (CAT) activity, inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines, and suppressing the activation of the NF-κB pathway. Collectively, Zn/Se-HNa was a more effective treatment than HNa to alleviate adverse impact of S. Typhi infection in broiler chickens.

CNVs, which are a type of structural variation, make a substantial impact on diverse characteristics in multiple species. Q-PCR and data association analysis were used for STAT5A gene copy in this study. This study aimed to investigate the copy number variation (CNV) of the STAT5A gene in seven Chinese cattle breeds, namely Qinchuan cattle, Xianan cattle, Yunling cattle, Ji'an cattle, Jiaxian Red cattle, Qaidam cattle, and Guyuan yellow cattle. Blood samples were collected for CNV typing, and the correlation between CNV type and growth traits was analyzed using SPSS 23.0 software and ANOVA. The findings revealed variations in the distribution of different copy number types among the different cattle breeds. Furthermore, association analysis demonstrated a positive impact of CNV in the STAT5A gene on cattle growth: in the JX, individuals with duplication types exhibited superior performance in terms of rump length (P < 0.05). Conversely, normal GY cattle demonstrated better body height and abdomen circumference (P < 0.05), while QD cattle exhibited a significant correlation between weight and body length with normal individuals (P < 0.05). Moreover, QC bovine duplication individuals outperformed other types, with copy number variation significantly associated with chest depth, chest width, and body length (P < 0.05). The results validate the correlation between copy number variation (CNV) of the STAT5A gene and growth characteristics in five different cattle breeds, providing a reliable benchmark for the purpose of cattle breeding.

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to estimate the pubertal growth height of children and adolescents living in a high-altitude region of Peru using the Preece-Baines model 1 (1 PB). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in schoolchildren from the department of Puno (Peru) between 3841 and 3874 masl. The age range was between 4 and 17 years. Standing height was evaluated. 1 PB was used to infer the mathematical and biological parameters of stature. RESULTS: Mathematical parameters estimated by the 1 PB model reflected small residual standard error (RSE) values in both sexes (0.25 in boys and 0.27 in girls). In boys, the age at which peak velocity was reached (APHV) was estimated at 13.21 ± 0.33years. While in girls it was 9.96 ± 0.26years (p < 0.05). In general, girls reached APHV (y) 3.25 years earlier than boys. On the other hand, the growth velocity of maximum height [APHV (cm/y)] of boys was higher (6.33 ± 6.06 cm/y) relative to girls (6.06 ± 0.32 cm/y). Estimated final adult height (EFAH) in boys was reached at 166.020 ± 0.99 cm and height at maximum growth velocity (HPHV) was 153.07 ± 0.67 cm, while in girls they were significantly lower (EFAH; 153.74 ± 0.44 cm and HPHV: 139.73 ± 0.84 cm). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that girls living in Puno at a high altitude in Peru reached APHV 3 years earlier than boys and at the same time reflected slower PHV. These results suggest that pubertal growth at high altitudes is slower in both sexes and especially in girls. Thus, modeling physical growth may be an important step in understanding the onset of puberty at different latitudes.

Introduction: The objective of this study is to contribute data on the temporal trends in weight, height, body mass index (BMI) and head circumference (HC) in boys adopted from Russia. Material and methods: Prospective observational study on an initial cohort of 139 Russian boys adopted in Spain between 2001 and 2013. Adverse history was collected by reviewing pre-adoption medical records. Anthropometric parameters were measured and recorded in a standardized way. The measurements obtained were compared with the World Health Organization child growth standards, calculating the corresponding z-scores (Z) and percentiles for age and sex. Results: Main history: preterm (32.4%), low birth weight (26.6%), prenatal alcohol exposure (19.4%), abandonment at birth (56.1%), abuse/neglect (49.3%). Initial post-arrival evaluation, 3 (1.7) years: weight Z, -1.24; height Z, -2.34; HC Z, -1.27. Significant catch-up growth (Z increase) in the first year: weight, +0.73; height, +1.05; HC, +0.6; in the second year: height, +0.58. Longitudinal growth pattern. Weight: from age 5 years, no relevant differences were observed. Height: at age 6 years a relevant delay persisted, from ages 7 to 11 years a gradual increase was observed, and from ages 12 to 17 years a gradual decrease, no showing relevant differences. BMI: showed that the degree of height delay was always higher than that of weight, balancing after age 14 years. HC: at age 5 years, there was no longer a relevant difference. Conclusions: These findings suggest that, despite the important delay of weight, HC, and especially height at the time of adoption, and the various adverse factors for growth that they presented, international adoption led to a substantial recovery of all anthropometric parameters, showing plasticity in the physical growth of these children. Introducción: El objetivo de este estudio es aportar datos sobre las tendencias temporales en peso, talla, índice de masa corporal (IMC) y perímetro cefálico (PC) en niños varones adoptados de Rusia. Material y métodos: Estudio observacional prospectivo sobre una cohorte inicial de 139 niños rusos adoptados en España entre los años 2001-2013. Se recopilaron antecedentes adversos revisando los informes médicos preadoptivos. Los parámetros antropométricos se midieron y registraron estandarizadamente. Las mediciones obtenidas se compararon con los estándares de crecimiento infantil de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, calculando las correspondientes puntuaciones Z (Z) y los percentiles para edad y sexo. Resultados: Antecedentes principales: pretérmino (32,4%), bajo peso al nacer (26,6%), exposición prenatal al alcohol (19,4%), abandono al nacimiento (56,1%), abuso/negligencia (49,3%). Evaluación inicial post-llegada, 3 (1,7) años: Z peso, -1,24; Z talla, -2,34; Z PC, -1,27. Crecimiento recuperador significativo (incremento Z) en el primer año: peso, +0.73; talla, +1.05; PC, +0.6; en el segundo año: talla, +0.58. Patrón de crecimiento longitudinal. Peso: desde los 5 años de edad no se observaron diferencias relevantes. Talla: a los 6 años de edad persistía retraso relevante, desde los 7 hasta los 11 años se observó aumento paulatino, y desde los 12 hasta los 17 años una disminución gradual, sin mostrar diferencias relevantes. IMC: mostró que el grado de retraso de la talla fue superior al del peso, equilibrándose a partir de los 14 años de edad. PC: a los 5 años de edad no se observó diferencia relevante. Conclusiones: Estos hallazgos sugieren que, a pesar del importante retraso del peso, PC y especialmente de la talla en el momento de la adopción, y de los diversos factores adversos para el crecimiento que presentaban, la adopción internacional condujo a una recuperación sustancial de todos los parámetros antropométricos ... Introducción: El crecimiento físico (CF) está determinado por factores genéticos y ambientales que producen variaciones en la población de las diferentes regiones del mundo. Objetivo: Comparar el CF lineal de niños y adolescentes que viven a moderada y elevada altitud del Perú. Metodología: Se efectuó un estudio trasversal (compara-tivo) en niños y adolescentes que viven a moderada (2.178metros) y elevada altitud (4.349 metros) del Perú. Se estudió a 563 escolares (276 niños y 287 niñas) de dos regiones geográficas de Puno (Perú). Se evaluó el peso, la estatura y circunferencia del brazo derecho. Se utilizó la referencia de la organización mundial de la salud (OMS) para categorizar el Z-Score por sexo y edad especifica. Resultados: Los niños de moderada altitud presentaron mayor peso corporal en todas las edades (p<0,05), sin em-bargo, en la estatura, a edades iniciales hubo diferencias en-tre ambas altitudes y en durante la adolescencia hubo valo-res similares. En la circunferencia del brazo no se observódiferencias significativas (p>0,05) entre los niños de ambasaltitudes en todas las edades. La estatura de los niños y ni-ñas de ambas altitudes presentaron Z-Score negativas,siendo más profundas en los niños de elevada altitud (niños-0.38 a -1.41 y niñas -0.77 a -1.80 Z-Score) en relación a lasque viven en moderada altitud (niños –0.05 a -1.30 y niñas-0.06 a -1.40 Z-Score). Conclusión: Este estudio demostró que los niños de am-bos sexos de 5 a los 16 años que viven a elevadas y modera-das altitudes del Perú, presentaron patrones de crecimiento li-neal disminuidos en relación a la referencia de la OMS,además, los niños que viven a elevada altitud presentaron es-taturas inferiores durante la niñez cuando fueron comparadoscon los de moderada altitud, sin embargo, durante la adoles-cencia evidenciaron un rápido crecimiento, nivelándose consus similares de moderada altitud (AU)

Methodology: A cross-sectional (comparative) study wascarried out in children and adolescents living at moderate(2,178 meters) and high altitude (4,349 meters) in Peru. The height of boys and girls of bothaltitudes presented negative Z-Score, being deeper in childrenof high altitude (boys -0.38 to -1.41 and girls -0.77 to -1.80Z-Score) in relation to those living in moderate altitude (boys-0.05 to -1.30 and girls -0.06 to -1.40 Z-Score). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that children of bothsexes from 5 to 16 years of age living at high and moderatealtitudes in Peru, presented diminished linear growth patternsin relation to the WHO reference, in addition, children livingat high altitude presented lower heights during childhoodwhen compared to those at moderate altitude, however, du-ring adolescence they showed rapid growth, leveling withtheir peers at moderate altitude (AU)

Background: infants receiving full breastfeeding (FBF) regulate their appetites differently from those receiving human milk substitutes (HMS). In addition, early exposure to the dietary cholesterol in human milk could lead to better cholesterol regulation in later stages of life. Therefore, the purpose was to compare lipid profiles in 4-month-old infants and to correlate lipid profile with anthropometric indicators and appetite-regulating hormones according to the type of feeding. Methods: this was a cross-sectional and correlational study, which included 145 mother-infant dyads according to the type of feeding; 64 received FBF, 47 partial breastfeeding (PBF), and 34 HMS. The complete lipid profile, total ghrelin, leptin, peptide YY, and glucagon-like peptide type 1 were measured. Z-scores for weight/age, length/age, weight/length, triceps (TSF) and subscapular folds (SSF) and body mass index for age were also obtained. Results: there were significant differences in triglycerides and LDL cholesterol according to the type of feeding. In the HMS group, an inverse relationship was observed between ghrelin and triglycerides (p = 0.038), ghrelin and total cholesterol (TC) (p = 0.026), and peptide YY and HDL cholesterol (p = 0.017). In the PBF group, a direct relationship was observed between length/age (z) and triglycerides (p = 0.001) and between subscapular folds and TC (p = 0.049). In infants receiving HMS, a direct correlation was observed between weight/age (z) and TC (p = 0.045) and between length/age (z) and LDL cholesterol (p = 0.010). Conclusion: these findings show a relationship between growth, energy reserve, lipid profile, and modulation of appetite-regulating hormones according to the type of feeding they received. (AU)


Introducción: los lactantes que reciben lactancia materna completa (LMC) regulan su apetito de manera diferente a los que reciben sucedáneos de la leche humana (SLH). Además, la exposición temprana al colesterol en la leche humana conduciría a mejor regulación del colesterol en etapas posteriores de la vida. El propósito fue de comparar el perfil lípidos en lactantes de cuatro meses y correlacionarlo con indicadores antropométricos y hormonas reguladoras del apetito según el tipo de alimentación. Métodos: en un estudio transversal y correlacional se incluyeron 145 díadas madre-lactante según el tipo de alimentación; 64 recibieron LMC, 47 lactancia materna parcial (LMP) y 34 SLH. Se midió el perfil lipídico, grelina total, leptina, péptido YY y péptido tipo 1 similar al glucagón. Se obtuvieron puntajes Z para peso/edad, longitud/edad, peso/longitud, pliegue cutáneo tricipital y subescapular e índice de masa corporal para la edad. Resultados: hubo diferencias significativas en triglicéridos y colesterol LDL según el tipo de alimentación. En el grupo HMS se observó una relación inversa entre grelina y triglicéridos (p = 0,038), grelina y colesterol total (TC) (p = 0,026), y péptido YY y colesterol HDL (p = 0,017). En el grupo PBF hubo relación directa entre longitud/edad (z) y triglicéridos (p = 0,001) y entre pliegues subescapulares y CT (p = 0,049). En los lactantes que recibieron HMS, se observó una correlación directa entre peso/edad (z) y CT (p = 0,045) y entre longitud/edad (z) y colesterol LDL (p = 0,010). Conclusión: los hallazgos muestran una relación entre perfil lipídico, crecimiento, reserva energética y modulación de las hormonas reguladoras del apetito según el tipo de alimentación. (AU)

Introduction: the nutritional status and growth of children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) can be affected due to feeding difficulties caused by their anatomy and the surgical interventions. Objective: this retrospective longitudinal study aims to analyse the growth trajectories of a cohort of children with CL/P and compare them with a healthy representative cohort of children from Aragon (Spain). Methods: type of cleft, surgical technique and sequelae, and weight, length/height and body mass index (BMI) (weight/height2) at different ages (0-6 years) were recorded. Normalized age- and sex-specific anthropometric Z-scores values were calculated by World Health Organization (WHO) charts. Results: forty-one patients (21 male, 20 female) were finally included: 9.75 % cleft lip (n = 4/41), 41.46 % cleft palate (n = 17/41) and 48.78 % cleft lip and palate (n = 20/41). The worst nutritional status Z-scores were achieved at the age of three months (44.44 % and 50 % had a weight and a BMI lower than -1 Z-score, respectively). Mean weight and BMI Z-scores were both significantly lower than controls at one, three and six months of age, recovering from that moment until the age of one year. Conclusions: the highest nutritional risk in CL/P patients takes place at 3-6 months of age, but nutritional status and growth trajectories get recovered from one year of age compared to their counterparts. Nevertheless, the rate of thin subjects among CL/P patients is higher during childhood.(AU)


Introducción: el estado nutricional y el crecimiento de los niños con labio y/o paladar fisurado (CL/P) pueden verse afectados debido a lasdificultades de alimentación provocadas por su anatomía y las intervenciones quirúrgicas.Objetivo: este estudio longitudinal retrospectivo tiene como objetivo analizar las trayectorias de crecimiento de una cohorte de niños con CL/Py compararlos con una cohorte representativa de niños sanos de Aragón (España).Métodos: se registraron el tipo de fisura, la técnica quirúrgica y las secuelas, el peso, la longitud/talla y el índice de masa corporal (IMC) (peso/talla2) a diferentes edades (0-6 años). Se calcularon las Z-score de los valores antropométricos según edad y sexo, mediante las tablas de laOrganización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).Resultados: se incluyeron 41 pacientes (21 hombres, 20 mujeres): 9,75 % con fisura labial (n = 4/41), 41,46 % con fisura palatina (n = 17/41)y 48,78 % con fisura labiopalatina (n = 20/41). Los valores Z-scores de la antropometría más bajos se alcanzaron a los tres meses de edad (el44,44 % y el 50 % tenían un peso y un IMC inferiores a -1 Z-score, respectivamente). Los valores de peso medio y de las puntuaciones Z delIMC fueron significativamente más bajos en los pacientes con fisura que en los controles a los uno, tres y seis meses de edad, recuperándosea partir de ese momento hasta equipararse al año de edad.Conclusiones: el mayor riesgo nutricional en pacientes con CL/P se presenta entre los tres y seis meses de edad, pero su estado nutricionaly las trayectorias de crecimiento se normalizan a partir del año de edad. Sin embargo, la proporción de individuos delgados entre los pacientescon CL/P es mayor durante la infancia.(AU)

PURPOSE: To validate Postnatal Growth and Retinopathy of Prematurity (G-ROP) criteria for Thai infants. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of infants receiving ROP screening during 2009-2020. METHODS: Baseline characteristics, clinical progression and final ROP outcomes were collected. G-ROP was applied to infants who met at least one of the following 6 criteria: birth weight (BW) below 1051 g, gestational age (GA) under 28 weeks, weight gain (WG) less than 120 g during postnatal day 10-19, WG less than 180 g during day 20-29, WG less than 170 g during day 30-39 and hydrocephalus. RESULTS: A total of 684 infants (boys, 53.4%) were included. Median (IQR) BW was 1200 (960-1470) grams and median GA was 30 (28-32) weeks. Prevalence of ROP was 26.6%, with 28 (4.1%) having type 1, 19 (2.8%) type 2 and, 135 (19.7%) having other ROP. Treatment was performed in 26 infants (3.8%). Sensitivity of G-ROP to include type 1, 2 or treatment-requiring ROP cases was 100% with 36.9% specificity, excluding 235 (34.4%) cases of unnecessary screening. To adjust for our setting of initial eye examination at 4 weeks' postnatal date, the last 2 criteria of G-ROP were replaced by the occurrence of grade 3 or 4 intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). This modified G-ROP criteria yielded 100% sensitivity, 42.5% specificity and excluded 271 (39.6%) cases of unnecessary screening. CONCLUSION: G-ROP criteria can be applied to our hospital setting. Occurrence of IVH grade 3 or 4 was proposed as an alternative in modified G-ROP criteria.

Introduction: childhood obesity is one of the main public health problems worldwide, leading to health status repercussions and growth and maturation process implications in both children and adolescents. Objective: the aim of this study was to verify body morphology and bone age variations in girls with obesity and without obesity. Methodology: this comprises a cross-sectional study conducted with 140 girls aged 8 to 15 years old, 70 with obesity and 70 without obesity. Hip and waist circumferences, body mass, height and and Body Mass Index (BMI) were determined. For maturation status determinations, bone ages were determined by a left wrist and hand radiography employing the Fels method. Results: the findigs indicate significant correlations between nutritional and maturation statuses (r=0.80; p˂0.01). Girls with obesity presented higher weight and BMI values, larger waist and hip circumferences and more advanced bone age compared to girls without obesity (p˂0.01). The same significant differences (p˂0.01) were noted in the contrasting maturational group analysis, where girls presenting advanced maturation always exhibited the highest parameter values. Conclusion: nutritional status is associated to maturation status, and girls with obesity exhibit more advanced bone age than girls without obesity.


Introdução: a obesidade infantil é um dos principais problemas de saúde pública mundial, com repercussões no estado de saúde e implicações no processo de crescimento e maturação de crianças e adolescentes. Objetivo: verificar a variação da morfologia corporal e da idade óssea em meninas com e sem obesidade. Metodologia: estudo transversal conduzido com 140 meninas de 8 a 15 anos de idade, sendo 70 meninas com obesidade e 70 sem obesidade. Foram mensuradas as circunferências do quadril e da cintura, massa corporal, altura e o Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC). Para o status maturacional foi determinada a idade óssea por meio de radiografia de punho e mão esquerdos pelo Método Fels. Resultados: os resultados apontaram a existência de correlação entre o status nutricional e o status maturacional (r=0,80; p˂0,01). As meninas com obesidade apresentaram maior peso, IMC mais elevado, circunferências maiores e idade óssea mais avançada quando comparadas às meninas sem obesidade (p˂0,01). Na análise dos grupos maturacionais contrastantes as mesmas diferenças se apresentaram com valores significativos (p˂0,01), sendo as meninas avançadas maturacionalmente sempre com valores superiores. Conclusão: o status nutricional apresentou correlação com o status maturacional, e as meninas com obesidade apresentam idade óssea mais avançada que aquelas sem obesidade

El objetivo de la presente revisión es describir aspectos específicos de la desnutrición secundaria a enfermedad y ofrecer pautas para un adecuado diagnóstico, interpretación de su fisiopatología y abordaje de niños pequeños en la práctica clínica pediátrica


Disease-associated undernutrition affects not only the child's growth and development, but also has impact on prognosis and survival. These effects are more severe and produce permanent sequelae if undernutrition affects the first year of life. The definition of this entity has recently been revised by scientific associations to better identify patients, understand the pathophysiology of undernutrition and add diagnostic and management tools. The objective of this review is to describe specific aspects of disease-associated undernutrition secondary to disease and offer guidelines for an adequate diagnosis, interpretation of its pathophysiology, and management of children in clinical practice

Understanding the growth pattern is important in view of child and adolescent development. Due to different tempo of growth and timing of adolescent growth spurt, individuals reach their adult height at different ages. Accurate models to assess the growth involve intrusive radiological methods whereas the predictive models based solely on height data are typically limited to percentiles and therefore rather inaccurate, especially during the onset of puberty. There is a need for more accurate non-invasive methods for height prediction that are easily applicable in the fields of sports and physical education, as well as in endocrinology. We developed a novel method, called Growth Curve Comparison (GCC), for height prediction, based on a large cohort of > 16,000 Slovenian schoolchildren followed yearly from ages 8 to 18. We compared the GCC method to the percentile method, linear regressor, decision tree regressor, and extreme gradient boosting. The GCC method outperformed the predictions of other methods over the entire age span both in boys and girls. The method was incorporated into a publicly available web application. We anticipate our method to be applicable also to other models predicting developmental outcomes of children and adolescents, such as for comparison of any developmental curves of anthropometric as well as fitness data. It can serve as a useful tool for assessment, planning, implementation, and monitoring of somatic and motor development of children and youth.

The intestinal microbiota is known to influence postnatal growth. We previously found that a strain of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (strain LpWJL) buffers the adverse effects of chronic undernutrition on the growth of juvenile germ-free mice. Here, we report that LpWJL sustains the postnatal growth of malnourished conventional animals and supports both insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and insulin production and activity. We have identified cell walls isolated from LpWJL, as well as muramyl dipeptide and mifamurtide, as sufficient cues to stimulate animal growth despite undernutrition. Further, we found that NOD2 is necessary in intestinal epithelial cells for LpWJL-mediated IGF-1 production and for postnatal growth promotion in malnourished conventional animals. These findings indicate that, coupled with renutrition, bacteria cell walls or purified NOD2 ligands have the potential to alleviate stunting.

OBJECTIVES: Using population-based data on height in Austria from birth cohort 1951 to 2002, we aim to evaluate the secular trends in height and developmental tempo among Austrian young men. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Austrian conscription medical examination. We included 1 205 112 conscripts (18-<20 years) who were born between 1951 and 2002 and 853 645 conscripts (17-<19 years) who were born between 1961 and 2002. Height was measured during the medical examination and was used to evaluate the secular trends of mean height over time. Furthermore, the mean difference in height between conscripts of 17- and 18 years old were compared across birth cohorts. RESULTS: The mean height of conscripts aged 17 years increased by 2.2 cm (p < .0001) in between 1961 and 2002. The mean height of conscripts aged 18 years increased by 4.3 cm (p < .0001) between 1951 and 2002. However, the increase in mean height has slowed down since the 1970 s. The difference in mean height between 17 and 18 years old widened from about 0.1 cm in 1961 to 0.3 cm around 1970 and then steadily narrowed again to 0.1 cm at the end of the study period. CONCLUSIONS: The increasing trend in height slows at the end of the 20th century, the developmental tempo at the population level, however, continued to increase. The difference in mean height between 17 and 18 years old narrowed, which may indicate that young men reached their final height earlier.
